MEDIA RELEASE - Skate deck art workshops head to Heywood this January

5 January 2018

Heywood youth will have the opportunity to transform their skateboards into roving pieces of art as part of series of free workshops these school holidays.

The Heywood Youth Action Crew will be hosting free Skate Deck Art workshops at the Heywood Skate Park on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 January from 10am – 12pm.

Glenelg Shire Council Youth Project Officer Angela Phillips said local artist Gene Stewart would facilitate the weekend long workshops, offering expert guidance and advice for participants.

“The Heywood Youth Action Crew were keen to work with Gene on another art project following the success of the recent street art projects and we are pleased to welcome him back for these workshops,” she said.

“The skateboard decks are an interesting painting surface to work on and provide some artistic challenges due to the unique shape and size. I’m really looking forward to seeing the variety and creativity of the finished pieces from the participants.”

Ms Phillips reminded local youth to register their interest for the free workshops ahead of time.

“Places are limited for the Skate Deck Art workshops so I encourage all those interested in attending to register their attendance to avoid disappointment,” she said.

“The workshops are flexible in that participants can attend one or both days depending on how long they want to spend on their art work and all materials are provided, including skateboard decks.

“All you need to bring is yourself and a creative design and you’ll be set for some creative fun these summer holidays.”

All interested youth between the ages of 12 – 25 are eligible to attend the free Skate Deck Art workshops.

To secure your place for the workshops please contact Angela Phillips, Youth Project Officer, on 0437 218 060 or message the Glenelg Shire Youth Facebook Page on
