MEDIA RELEASE - Community invited to celebrate all abilities

9 November 2018

Community members are invited to help celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disability as part of the local celebrations for International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

The Glenelg Shire Council will host a free public event on Wednesday 28 November at the Portland Civic Hall to recognise the United Nations (UN) sanctioned day, which also raises awareness of the importance of inclusion and accessibility.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank encouraged residents to attend the IDPwD event, which will be one of the thousands of events held across Australia.

“International Day of People with Disability is an empowering concept and one that council is proud to support. It’s a great opportunity to bring together individuals, schools, businesses and community organisations to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability,” Cr Rank said.

“To celebrate the day we have a whole range of free events, activities and entertainment on offer. There will be laughter yoga, bubble blowing, wheelchair basketball and percussion workshops just to name a few.

“Local guitarist Shaun Spencer will also perform on stage throughout the day and a range of food and beverage options will be on hand during lunchtime.

“I encourage all individuals and organisations to attend our IDPwD event and help celebrate this important day, we all have a role to play in creating a welcoming, accessible and inclusive community to people of all backgrounds and abilities.”

The Glenelg Shire IDPwD event will take place from 10am -2:30pm at the Portland Civic Hall. For further information on the IDPwD celebrations please visit the event listing via council’s Facebook page.
