MEDIA RELEASE - Another achievement for Heywood Kindergarten

12 December 2019

Heywood Kindergarten has reaffirmed its status as a leading early childhood education provider after receiving state-wide recognition for its commitment to health and wellbeing.

The council-managed kindergarten has received its sixth and final health priority icon as part of the Victorian Government’s Achievement Program.

Glenelg Shire Council Children’s Services Manager Janine Johnstone said the milestone was a testament to the hardworking efforts of staff and ongoing collaboration with families.

“This achievement further reinforces the wonderful children’s programs we have on offer in the Glenelg Shire,” she said.

“Over the past four years educators at Heywood Kindergarten have been working tirelessly to create a healthy and supportive environment for our region’s youngest, using a whole-service approach that includes staff, students, families and the wider community.

“I praise these efforts of our staff and the successful partnerships they have formed with families and the wider Heywood community. The service is passionate about ensuring better learning outcomes and setting children and adults up with healthy habits for life.”

The Achievement Program is a Victoria Government initiative that aims to encourage healthier lifestyles and prevent lifestyle related diseases, as based upon the World Health Organisation’s model for health.

Participating schools, early childhood services and workplaces are guided through a framework of continuous planning, action and review to address health priority areas. Once the school, service provider or workplace achieves the benchmarks set for the health priority area, they are eligible to receive an icon.

Heywood Kindergarten has now been awarded all health priority icons for their best practice approaches to healthy eating and oral health, mental health and wellbeing, physical activity, sun protection, tobacco control and safe environments.
