MEDIA RELEASE - Apprentice invited to Government House

12 December 2019

A council apprentice has been given the invitation of a lifetime, networking with Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria as part of a recent recognition event for the trade sector.

Charli Mirtschin, a first year diesel mechanic at the Glenelg Shire Council, was invited to attend the Victorian Governor’s ‘Women in Trades’ Reception, held at the Government House Melbourne on Tuesday 10 December.

Hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and Mr Anthony Howard AM QC, the ‘Women in Trades’ reception aims to recognise the contributions of women to the sector and enhance the profile of women in trade.

Charli was one of twenty women from across the state selected from the Apprenticeship Employment Network to attend the prestigious event.

Charli described the evening as a “whirlwind”.

“It was a fantastic evening celebrating the trade sector and provided a great opportunity to network with other like-minded women across the state,” she said.

“Meeting the Governor of Victoria was a particularly special moment, she was so welcoming, friendly and enthusiastic to all of the many people she met throughout the night.”

“The Governor later addressed the reception and cited the event as part of Government House’s Christmas celebrations. She described the importance of the trade sector to the community and made special mentions to the many institutes and training providers across Victoria who are helping to support and grow the industry for the future.”

“It was a whirlwind of a night, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I was given to be able to attend.”

Charli commenced her apprenticeship with the Glenelg Shire Council in January 2019 and is based at the Heywood Depot.
