MEDIA RELEASE - Overhaul for Island Park

24 November 2020

Island Park is set for a major overhaul, with a series of upgrades secured for the popular recreational precinct.

The Glenelg Shire Council has secured funding for a new modular pump track and outdoor half-basketball court at Island Park though the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

The two projects were identified as key priorities for the township following previous consultation sessions and community feedback and will add to Casterton’s already strong identity as a family-friendly, active destination.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the projects would ‘transform’ Island Park.

“Island Park will soon offer facilities for basketball, skateboarding, scooting and bike riding, enhancing the already extensive range of sport and recreational offerings within the precinct. It will transform Casterton and provide a whole range of new opportunities not just for the township, but for the whole region,” she said.

“The new customised modular track will be similar to the pump track at Heywood, which is currently under construction, offering a continuous loop of bumps and turns for bikes, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades.

“The new half court will be the first public outdoor basketball court for Casterton and will provide an informal meeting space for local youth, as well as a practice location for avid basketballers.

“The pump track and the half basketball court will also follow on from the proposed Casterton Community Garden - highlighting the range of major projects earmarked which will overhaul Island Park, both for locals and visitors alike.

“We look forward to seeing these works commencing in the coming months.”

The pump track and basketball court will be positioned opposite each other, adjacent to the Casterton Caravan Park.
