MEDIA RELEASE - Celebrating all things youth

26 November 2020

Young people across the Glenelg Shire will be supported to stay connected and showcase their creativity as part of local Victorian Youth Week celebrations.

A special month-long Victorian Youth Week, held from 15 November to 15 December 2020, is currently underway in partnership with local young people and schools.

Glenelg Shire Youth Development Officer Madeleine McKinna said this year’s theme was ‘We Made It’, highlighting the resilience of young people throughout 2020.

“2020 certainly has been a challenging year for young people in the Glenelg Shire, with a complete disruption to their school, work and personal lives,” she said.

“To celebrate their resilience throughout these difficult times, we have a number of activities and events planned which have been co-designed with our local schools. Each activity and event will relate to this year’s theme of how they “made it” through 2020.

“Furthermore, a short video will also be created and shared online that will share these positive messages, and highlight how young people have come together and supported each other throughout the year.”

Ms McKinna said the celebrations were timely, providing a chance for introductions of the new look Glenelg Shire Youth team.

“As a new contact point for the Youth Development Unit, I am looking forward to using Youth Week as an opportunity to meet with young people, share ideas, reflect on previous successes and start planning our programs for 2021,” she said.

Ms McKinna will join Bright Futures Project Officer (Skittles) Officer Lauren Millard as part of the core team for the Glenelg Shire Youth team and will be responsible for coordinating youth events and programs, such as Live4Life Glenelg.

Victorian Youth Week in the Glenelg Shire has been funded through the Victorian Government, Equality and Youth Branch, Department of Premier and Cabinet.
