MEDIA RELEASE - Rating and Revenue Plan set

24 June 2021

A system for collection of rates and revenue in the Glenelg Shire has been set, following the endorsement of a key strategic document.

The Glenelg Shire Revenue and Rating Plan was adopted by Councillors at Tuesday night’s June Council Meeting.

The Plan was adopted with no changes to the current financial year; however, Council will commit to exploring a transition to a differential rate system in future financial years.

“Under the endorsed Plan the rating system will remain at the current status quo, with no discernible change for property owners for the financial year,” said Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank.

“Due to financial impacts of the pandemic, Council has unanimously agreed that we need to continue to help our community recover. This means providing support and keeping our rate system consistent with that of previous years.

“We also thank the respectful engagement we received from the community during the development of the plan, particularly our primary producers. This meaningful feedback has been taken into account.

“Councillors have committed to reviewing the option of a differential rate system in the future, which will see set different rates in the dollar for different categories of rateable land.

“As part of this review we will engage further with the community to seek their feedback on this system. We will announce dates for these sessions later in the year.”

The Rating and Revenue Plan is a four-year plan outlining how Council will generate income and deliver on programs, services and capital works commitments.

The Plan, which is a requirement of the new Local Government Act 2020, has been informed by the recommendations from the Victorian State Government Local Government Rating System Review.

Copies of the Revenue and Rating Plan will be available to view via the YourSay Glenelg and Glenelg Shire website from 28 June 2021.
