The relaxed community of Portland is a far cry from the bustling streets of Bangladesh and Singapore, but for Faruk Ahmed and his family the Glenelg Shire is the only place they will call home after becoming Australian citizens.

Mr Ahmed, his wife and two children became Australian citizens at a special Citizenship Ceremony yesterday alongside fellow shire residents Mrs Eileen Milich and Mr Paul Naveen.

Mr Ahmed said that his family were very proud to call the Glenelg Shire home.

“After becoming an Australian citizen we feel that we are now part of Australia, as well as being part of Portland,” he said.

“We are originally from Bangladesh but we have spent the past five years in Singapore amongst busy traffic and 30 floor skyscrapers, a completely different lifestyle to Portland.

“We moved to Portland for a better quality of life and for secure employment opportunities and we haven’t looked back since.

“We feel a great sense of community in Portland, it is simple things such as being able to recognise your neighbour and say hello to them down the street that really make a difference.

“The people have made an effort to welcome us and now the children have so many friends they do not want to leave. This is our home now, we are very happy living here.”

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said that she was humbled to be able to welcome the shire’s newest citizens.

“It is one of the most rewarding aspects as Mayor to be able to officially confer our new citizens,” she said.

"I congratulate all our new citizens and their families on making their commitment to Australia and wish them well as they continue to forge a new life for themselves here in the Glenelg Shire.”
