MEDIA RELEASE - Escape to everywhere for Children's Book Week

4 August 2017

Children and families in the Glenelg Shire are invited to escape to a faraway land and everywhere in between this August.

From Saturday 19 August to Saturday 26 August the Glenelg Libraries will be celebrating Children’s Book Week, a national initiative facilitated by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA).

Libraries across the Glenelg Shire will host a range of events, activities and displays for community members to enjoy as part of this week-long celebration.

Acting Information and Library Services Manager Tanya Flockhart said that all of the events will be inspired by this year’s theme, ‘Escape to Everywhere’.

“The Glenelg Libraries are delighted to offer a number of imaginative and hands-on activities to help celebrate the love of reading this Children’s Book Week,” she said.

“There will be displays, such as the bunting flags showcase, a chance for kids to grab a ticket to the land of the unknown, an activity afternoon to create a passport and travel brochure and a special story time session.

“All events are free and children and young people are welcome to come along to one or all of the activities. However places are limited for the activity afternoon event so please book in early to avoid disappointment.”

The following events and activities will be on offer as part of Children’s Book Week:

• Bunting Flags showcase – This creative display will see children’s illustrations from various books reimagined on a series of colourful bunting flags. Flags from local school children will be on display at the Portland Library or create and add your own at the Heywood and Casterton library.
• Travel to ticket – Children can select a ticket from a lucky dip which will reveal the destination that they can escape to, as well as matching it to the key in the book in which this destination lies. Tickets will be available at all local libraries.
• Escape to Everywhere activity afternoon – Create a travel brochure and passport on Thursday 24th August, from 4:15pm – 5:15pm at the Portland Library. Places are limited.
• Special Escape to Everywhere Themed Story time – Join the Glenelg Libraries team on Friday 25 August at 11am for a special travel themed story time. Bring along something from your families travels to add to our magical suitcase during the session.

To make a booking for the Escape to Everywhere activity afternoon, or for further information on any of the free activities listed, please contact the Glenelg Libraries on 5522 2265.
