MEDIA RELEASE - Council's 'Listening Post' a success

6 October 2017

The first round of council’s Listening Post was held at Nelson Hotel on Monday 25 September, which saw community members speak with council in an informal discussion in regards to local issues affecting their community.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank, Cr Karen Stephens, Cr Robert Halliday, CEO Greg Burgoyne and staff members attended the session to listen and talk through various topics with community members.

Local Nelson residents had the opportunity to speak about local issues they believed needed attention, such as drains, walkways and creating easier access from north Nelson to south Nelson across the highway.

The upgrade of rural roads in the Nelson region was the main topic of discussion from locals who said the roads were beginning to become too dangerous.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council have been working tirelessly to attract State Government funding to create safer roads in the shire.

“It is important for communities to band together in pushing for government funding for new roads,” Cr Rank said.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank was pleased with the outcome from council’s first Listening Post session.

“Council was congratulated by community members on the coastal management of the Nelson coastline saying the weed control was the best it had ever been.

“It was great to hear some positive feedback, as well as learn of issues we are now able to work on.”

The Glenelg Shire Council Plan 2017-21 identified four Listening Post events to be held across the shire every year of the plan, with quarterly events to be held across the shire in coming months in Merino, Dartmoor and Narrawong.

If you are unable to attend the Listening Post sessions, you can visit https://yoursay.glenelg.vic.gov.au/ to register your issue online.
