MEDIA RELEASE - Changing Places A Success

11 October 2017

Glenelg Shire Council would formally like to thank members of the community who provided input into the proposed inclusion of a Changing Place as part of the Portland Foreshore Master Plan.

Changing Places facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets, and have extra features with more space to meet the needs of people with a disability and their carer.

Community engagement sessions were held with the wider community and key stakeholders for input and support as part of the application for funding to be made to Department of Health and Human Services.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the community engagement successes were successful, welcoming substantial backing for the initiative.

“Through the engagement sessions and the Your Say Glenelg website, council attracted 44 submissions,” Cr Rank said.

“This included submissions from those who are directly linked to a person with a disability as a carer or family members and those with a disability themselves.”

Cr Rank was delighted with the success of the community engagement for this project.

“It’s great that so many residents and visitors to the Glenelg Shire are supportive of our desire to further redevelop the foreshore, and the inclusion of a Changing Place facility is a key initiative in ensuring more inclusive and accessible facilities and community spaces.

The completion of the foreshore redevelopment will include construction of an inclusive playground and replacement of the Old Town Jetty to provide added attractions to the popular recreation site, which covers the area between the Trawler Wharf and Nun’s Beach.

A number of organisations that advocate and support people with disabilities and their families provided letters of support for the project to be submitted with the application, due for submission this Friday, 13 October 2017.
