Welcome to the Glenelg Shire Council

MEDIA RELEASE - Shire on the lookout for volunteers ahead of busy tourist season

17 November 2017

Long time volunteer Jan Lovell

If you know the best places to eat, drink, shop and play in the Glenelg Shire, your knowledge and skills are needed this summer holiday season.

The Glenelg Shire Council are welcoming expressions of interests from friendly locals to volunteer their time at one of the shire’s bustling Visitor Information Centres during the peak tourist season.

Visitor Information Centre Volunteer Jan Lovell was quick to recommend the volunteering program, describing the experience as “incredibly rewarding.”

“I’ve been working as a volunteer at the Portland Visitor Information Centre for over 15 years and I just love it,” she said.

“On my days at the centre I get to meet people from all over the world and help make their stay in the local area that little bit easier and more enjoyable.

“Every day is different and the best part is that I get to talk about all the things that I love about living in the Glenelg Shire. I always leave the centre with a smile knowing that I am giving back to the community and helping to spread the word about our great region and the vast attractions we have to share.”

The centres, which are located in Portland, Casterton and Nelson, are the first point of contact for all visitors passing through the shire and offer guidance and support on local activities, events, venues and more.

Volunteers would be required to provide assistance with daily queries and work with team members to provide a welcoming environment for all visitors through the centre.

Training, equipment and uniforms will be provided and flexible working arrangements are available.

For further information, or to submit an expression of interest, please contact Tourism and Marketing Manager Liz McKinnon via email at or call the Portland Information Centre on 1800 035 567.
