MEDIA RELEASE - Sasha a Step Closer to Career Dream

29 November 2017

Local Portland Secondary College Reengagement Centre student, 17 year-old Sasha Wright is one step closer to building her career goals by landing her dream work experience job at Portland’s Visitor Information Centre.

Through Glenelg Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Networks, Sasha will be completing her work placement at the Portland VIC over a three week period where she will gain extensive knowledge in local tourism.

Determined to learn, Sasha said she wants to work in the tourism and travel industry once she has completed school.

“Working at the VIC will be really beneficial as it is a great starting base for me as well as the career path I would like to achieve,” she said.

Portland Reengagement Centre’s teacher Katie Kelly said Sasha had demonstrated her commitment and dedication to her studies by successfully completing her VCAL Foundation Certificate and her Certificate II in Hospitality this year.

“She puts in 100 per cent for every activity, both classwork and our community based work and is incredibly reliable, punctual and a positive role model for her peers,” Mrs Kelly said.

“In 2018, Sasha will be completing her VCAL Intermediate Certificate whilst also undertaking a VCE unit at the Portland Secondary College Must Street Campus.”

GSG LLEN structured workplace coordinator Lilja Radley said the Glenelg Shire Council along with numerous other local employers both in Heywood and Portland have been extremely supportive in offering students work placements.

“Students gain so much from the time in a work place, they gain an insight into the relevant industry, they learn how a business operates and gain valuable real life experience,” Lilja said.

“It is great to see so much support and encouragement from local businesses and the positive impact work placements have on our local students.”
