MEDIA RELEASE - Local kinder demonstrates the spirit of giving this festive season

6 December 2017

Heywood’s youngest and most generous have rallied together to support their local community this Christmas period.

Staff and children at Heywood Kindergarten have collected items and goods for donation as part of the centre’s highly successful Adopt a Pensioner program, helping to support community members most in need.

Glenelg Shire Council Children’s Services Manager Janine Johnstone said the program was a testament to the generosity of the local Heywood community.

“The Adopt a Pensioner program has been in place at the Heywood Kindergarten since 2011 and every term the children relish the opportunity to give back to their community,” she said.

“As part of the program each term the kindergarten collects donations to package together to send to the less fortunate.

“These items, which can include canned food and luxury cleaning products such as soap and shampoo, are given to Heywood Rural Health which then delivers them on to community members in need.

“The program has since improved the lives of over 20 elderly residents in Heywood, providing them with items that they otherwise could not afford or access.

“I applaud all those involved, especially the staff of Heywood Kindergarten for continuing to champion this project. These donations will be particularly appreciated this Christmas season, which can be the hardest time of the year for many community members.”

The Adopt a Pensioner Program will continue to be rolled out at the Heywood Kindergarten in 2018.

Any community members that are interested in donating their items are advised to contact the Heywood Kindergarten team on 5527 1382 or email
