MEDIA RELEASE - Refresh for iconic building

23 January 2018

A landmark historic building and community asset is set to be restored thanks to the Glenelg Shire Council.

The Ruth Martin Memorial Building, located in Portland, will undergo several building and maintenance upgrades to help restore the building its iconic state.

The Julia street building is currently the home of community radio station 3RPC and is one of the shire’s most recognisable and prized community venues.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the upgrades would ensure the not-for-profit station would continue to succeed for years to come.

“Community groups such as 3RPC are the lifeblood of our shire and we are proud to help support the fantastic work that they do by restoring the Ruth Martin Memorial building to its former glory,” she said.

“Over time the building has retained much its heritage facade, however urgent works are required to refresh the exterior and replace elements such as the fret work.

“These upgrades will cover the essential restoration works and internal building repairs and ensure that radio staff can continue to operate in a comfortable and inviting space.

“3RPC Radio has been based at the Ruth Martin Memorial Building for more than 20 years and we hope that these upgrades will help to ensure the station can continue to call the building home for decades to come.”

Upgrades to the Ruth Martin Memorial Building include:
• External rendering and painting works
• Replacement of fret work
• Replacement of flashings and spouting to prevent water leaks
• Minor electrical repairs
Works are expected to be completed by mid-2018.

3RPC Community Radio will continue to operate during the building upgrades.
