MEDIA RELEASE - Test your basketball and skating skills at Hooked on Portland

Friday 19 January

Sharpen-up on your basketball and skating skills this Australia Day long weekend at the Hooked on Portland festival Youth Zone.

Free skate and basketball skill sessions are part of a number of youth activities being hosted throughout the day on Saturday 27 January at the Portland foreshore as part of the three-day festival.

Glenelg Shire Council youth development officer Cathryn Walder said Hooked on Portland’s Youth Zone organised by council in conjunction with FReeZA and the FReeZA crew members would include a large range of youth activities in a smoke, drug and alcohol free area.

“FReeZA is a Victorian Government initiative that supports young Victorians to get involved in their community by planning and running drug, smoke and alcohol-free music and cultural events for other young people,” Ms Walder said.

“We expect the Youth Zone to be extremely popular amongst local youth and tourists travelling to Portland for the festival with All Aboard Skateboarding Sessions hosting free skating clinics as well a bowl competition later in the evening.

“Portland has one of the best skate parks in the region and these sessions and competitions always draw a large crowd to town. It is great to see this youth space being utilised in such a positive way.”

Ms Walder said the Portland Basketball Association would also be hosting basketball skill sessions and competitions throughout the day.

“Plaster art, giant Jenga, back-yard cricket and laser tag will also be available in the Youth Zone throughout the afternoon,” she said.

“This zone is not only great for our youngest festival goers to come enjoy the festival, but it will give adults the opportunity to relax and watch some live music or a MasterChef session while their kids stay active.”

The Portland Basketball Association is hosting skill sessions and competitions from 12pm to 1:30pm followed by All Aboard Skateboarding sessions from 2pm to 6pm with a bowl competition from 6pm to 7pm with prizes to be won.

Laser tag will be available from 2pm to 4pm with plaster art, giant Jenga and cricket ready to play all day long.
