MEDIA RELEASE - Light it up blue for autism awareness

19 March 2018

Community members are invited to wear their favourite blue outfit and help show their support for autism awareness this April as part of local celebrations for World Autism Awareness Day.

The Glenelg Shire Council will be hosting a number of free events in Portland, encouraging attendees to ‘light it up blue’, the official theme for 2018.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the events aimed to build community awareness and understanding of autism.

“In conjunction with the Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre, a free pool party will be held on Wednesday 4 April, offering individuals and groups the chance to come together and support autism awareness,” she said.

“Attendees will be encouraged to wear a piece of blue clothing or a blue accessory and share their experiences across social media with the hashtag #LightItUpBlue.

“The celebrations will also extend throughout the week with a free movie night taking place at the Portland Arts Centre on Friday 6 April, offering an exclusive screening of the documentary Spectrospective.

“Spectrospective has been produced by Amaze, the peak body for people on the autism spectrum and their supporters in Victoria, and follows the thoughts, challenges and achievements of people on the spectrum.

“With a number of inclusive events on offer I encourage community members to get involved with the celebrations and help light it up blue for autism awareness.”

World Autism Awareness Day celebrations will continue throughout the month, with local businesses encouraged to implement a Quiet Hour once a week during April to raise awareness of autism.

Quiet Hour is a sensory friendly experience and helps make shopping easier for those on the autism spectrum by reducing radio levels, dimming of lights and avoiding store announcements.

Quiet Hour has gathered momentum in recent years with supermarket chain Coles offering the initiative on a regular basis across 68 stores since November 2017.
