MEDIA RELEASE - Businesses show their support for Quiet Hour

22 March 2018

Businesses across the Glenelg Shire are showing their support for World Autism Awareness Month, offering a sensory friendly shopping experience during April.

An initiative known as Quiet Hour will be implemented across 16 participating businesses in Portland, Heywood, Casterton and Nelson, providing lower radio levels, dimmed lighting levels and minimal store announcements to make shopping easier for those on the autism spectrum.

Local business owner Bruce Elijah of Elijah’s Sportspower said the decision to offer Quiet Hour was an easy one.

“Implementing Quiet Hour in our store is a simple, convenient and effective way to offer a positive shopping experience for all people and support our local community,” he said.

“Many people don’t realise just how overwhelming a trip to the shops can be for those on the autism spectrum. This initiative will help to raise awareness for autism and the barriers that are faced on a daily basis.”

Quiet Hour has been implemented as part of the Glenelg Shire Council’s World Autism Awareness Month celebrations, with businesses encouraged to offer the initiative every Tuesday morning throughout April from 10:30am – 11:30am.

Alongside Elijah’s Sportspower, Quiet Hour will be offered at Portland Disposals Camping and Hardware, Murrell’s Shoe Shop, A Little Decorum, Maggie Lou’s Take Away, Casterton This ‘N’ That, South West Conveyancing, Yes Optus Portland, Southwest Marine and More, Admella’s Fruit n Veg, McNamara Clothing, Daly’s IGA Portland, Keating’s Pharmacy, Portland Studios, Portland Wannon Water and Nelson Cottage Guest House B&B.

Quiet Hour has gathered momentum in recent years with supermarket chain Coles offering the sensory friendly experience on a regular basis across 68 stores since November 2017.
