MEDIA RELEASE - Last weekend to claim Hooked on Tuna prize

24 April 2018

The showdown for the top prize of the Hooked on Tuna fishing competition is heating up with the elusive 100kg plus tuna teasing entrants at the weekend.

Two separate groups of fishers caught massive tuna, one weighing 125kg and the other 107kg, but had failed to enter the competition.

This left Melbourne based fisherman Jony Ai leading the competition, vying for more than $12,000 in prizemoney, with his 29.8 kg haul, caught on the second weekend of the competition.

His closet rival is David Willchams who snared a 28kg catch over the weekend, both caught on the same vessel.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said more than 150 people had entered the competition over the past four weekends, travelling largely from metropolitan Melbourne.

“This month long competition has further strengthened Portland’s title as Australia’s Bluefin tuna capital,” she said.

“Throughout April fishermen of all ages and abilities from as far as Melbourne have grabbed their mates and spent hours in Portland Bay testing their talents.

“The event has brought significant economic stimulus to our town with cafes and restaurants busy, and accommodation in short supply across town. It has been a resounding success for our community and local businesses.”

To celebrate the final weekend of fishing action, internationally renowned fisherman Peter Pakula will host a series of free presentations, offering expert advice on how to fine tune fishing techniques.

The Queensland based fisherman, who has received worldwide success from making and designing lures, will present at the Portland Yacht Club on both Saturday 28 April from 7pm, and again on Sunday 29 April at 3:30pm during the final weigh in event. All interested community members are welcome to attend.

Final event registrations will open from 6.30am this Saturday, with the competition winners announced at the final weigh-in event on Sunday from 3.30pm – 5:30pm.
