MEDIA RELEASE - Council's Indigenous scholarships support future study

24 August 2018

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth have the opportunity to receive scholarship assistance towards future study in 2019.

Glenelg Shire Council provides successful applicants $2000 in financial support through the Aboriginal Educational Scholarship program each year.

The program is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youth aged between 17 and 24 who are undertaking further study beyond year 12 and will be studying at TAFE or university.

Glenelg Shire director community services Edith Farrell said the scholarships had provided a helping hand to young people in the past by enabling them to reach their future dreams and aspirations.

“The program has been running for four years now, with seven young people being successful in obtaining a scholarship,” Ms Farrell said.

“Receiving a scholarship will assist to reduce the financial burden on the students and their families by assisting with course fees, books and stationary, compulsory clothing and travel expenses.

“The program is a great opportunity for young people in our shire to take advantage of.”

To be eligible a young person must be a resident of the Glenelg Shire and have completed year 12 or equivalent and be enrolled in further study.

Applications close 5pm Friday 21 September 2018.
