MEDIA RELEASE - Saleyards injects $10.4 million into local economy

2 October 2018

The Casterton Saleyards has retained its status as one of the region’s premier selling facilities, injecting more than $10 million into the local economy during the previous financial year.

The release of the 2017/18 Casterton Saleyards annual report, released on the eve of the start of the selling season this week, highlighted another strong year for the facility. A total of seven sales were held for the financial year with 8,750 head of cattle and 12,623 head of sheep sold for a gross sale figure of $10.4 million.

Casterton Saleyards operations manager Jason Gorman said the report further reinforced confidence for south west farmers utilising the facilities.

“It’s been another multi-million dollar year for the Casterton Saleyards with our regular sales continuing to attract a high quality of stock and attracting buyer interest from across Victoria and interstate,” he said.

“Council recently released new branding for the facility, which will provide a recognisable brand for the yards, which are among the oldest in Victoria and considered a boutique selling centre. Already our local agents are working together, using this council logo in their marketing campaigns.”

Mr Gorman noted sellers continued to be attracted to the saleyard’s because of its competitive pricing.

“Our selling fees are up to 38 per cent lower than nearby competitors,” he said.

“Not only is Casterton fully accredited and compliant, our fees are also much lower than neighbouring yards, meaning sellers and buyers can access the very best facilities at the most affordable rate, savings which can be invested back on farm.

“The cost of selling cattle at other regional selling centres can be up to more than $5 more per head more than at Casterton, which can equate to quite a significant difference in selling fees. For farmers looking to secure a more competitive price for selling their livestock, the Casterton Saleyards is an obvious choice.”

The next scheduled sale will take place on Thursday 4 October 2018.
