MEDIA RELEASE - Grab your breakfast on your walk to school

17 October 2018

Students across the Glenelg Shire will have an added incentive to walk, ride or scoot to school next week, with a free ‘Breakfast on the Go’ on offer to help fuel their bodies for the day ahead.

The Portland YMCA will be offering free breakfast items to students on their active commute to school in Portland, Heywood and Casterton as part of Walk to School program. From Monday 22 – Thursday 25 October, free fruit and muesli bars will be distributed to students at a central location on their walk to school.

Portland YMCA manager Kerri Jennings hoped the benefits of ‘Breakfast on the Go’ would extend beyond greater participation rates.

“The YMCA is proud to partner with the Glenelg Shire Council and VicHealth on the Walk to School program. Our free Breakfast on the Go offering is a fun and easy way to help support and encourage local primary school students to choose an active method of travel to school,” she said.

"But above all, Breakfast on the Go ensures that all students have an equal opportunity to receive a wholesome, nutritious breakfast. I look forward to seeing as many students as possible enjoying a healthy breakfast on their walk to school next week.”

Held every October, Walk to School month encourages kids and families to get active on the trip to and from school to help build healthy habits for life.

To support the program, the Glenelg Shire Council has worked in partnership with primary schools to deliver incentives and activities for students throughout the month, including a local competition to reward the highest rates of participation.

The school that records the most amount of kilometres walked, riden or scooted in the shire will receive a $2500 prize towards an active recreation project of their choosing. The individual student who has recorded the highest frequency of walks, rides or scoots to their school during October will also receive a $200 voucher to their local sports store.

Furthermore all schools who participate in the Walk to School program will receive a sports equipment voucher and will be eligible for major prizes through VicHealth.
