MEDIA RELEASE - Beat the summer heat at your local outdoor pool

20 November 2018

Glenelg Shire residents are encouraged to enjoy a cool summer by their local swimming pool as the 2018/2019 outdoor pool season approaches.

Council’s outdoor pools in Portland, Heywood, Casterton and Merino will all open on Saturday 1 December, kicking off what is expected to be another busy swimming season this summer.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the shire’s aquatic facilities were in great shape following recent upgrades.

“Our swimming pools across the shire are ready to welcome eager swimmers of all ages,” she said.

“Casterton’s Memorial Swimming Pool, one of our region’s most popular facilities, is looking superb after a $50,000 upgrade earlier this year to replace the roof and to install a new solar system to ensure stability of the pool water temperature.

“This follows on from the $850,000 pool refurbishment last year supported through Sports and Recreation Victoria for new concrete paths, new pool grating and tiling and a new access ramp.

“Furthermore, the Merino Outdoor Pool is ready for swimmers to make a splash after council funded $350,000 worth of improvements in late 2017 to install a new water treatment plant and shed, new concrete paths and a new shade sail over the toddler pool.

“There is no better time to get outside and enjoy your local swimming pool - kids can play in a designated area, keen swimmers can use one of the allocated lanes for lap swimming and the community has the perfect place to relax, or stay active, in a safely monitored environment.”

Council’s outdoor pools are open every day except Christmas Day and in the instance of inclement weather.
