MEDIA RELEASE - Commonwealth Games gold medallist headlines International Women's Day

20 February 2019

2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and 2018 Number One World Ranked Javelin Thrower Kathryn Mitchell will reflect on her journey to success and the growing profile of women in sport as part of local celebrations for International Women’s Day in Casterton.

Mitchell will present at the 2019 Women in Sport Breakfast hosted by South West Sport and the Glenelg Shire Council, on 8 March from 7:15am at the Casterton Bowling Club.

The event will focus on the changing landscape of sporting clubs in regards to women in sport and will also feature fellow guest speaker John Coxon, 2019 Glenelg Shire Joint Senior Citizen of the Year.

Event organiser Mark Jansz from South West Sport encouraged community members of all ages to come along to hear from the Commonwealth Games medallist and former Casterton resident.

“We are delighted to kick off our Women in Sport breakfast series in Casterton and it is only fitting that we launch these events on International Women’s Day to help recognise the role of women in sport,” he said.

“Casterton locals will be all too familiar with the success story of Kathryn Mitchell, who has received tremendous international success for her athletic abilities, including most recently at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Queensland. Kathryn will take the opportunity to reflect on her achievements, as well as discussing how we can work towards levelling the playing field for women and girls in sport and active recreation.

“Casterton’s John Coxon, 2019 Glenelg Shire Joint Senior Citizen of the Year, will also present at the breakfast on the rise of participation rates and inclusive practices for women.

“The breakfast is open to all men, women, boys and girls and is a great opportunity to hear from local leaders regarding their experience in sport and the growing focus on women in sport both on and off field.”

The event is $15 per person which includes a cooked breakfast, guest speakers and an International Women’s Day Pack.
To book your place at the breakfast please book online through Try Booking via: https://www.trybooking.com/BATKJ. Alternatively, bookings can also be made by calling South West Sports on 5561 1689.

Held on 8 March each year, International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s theme is ‘Balance for Better’ and focuses on the benefits of building a gender balanced world.
