Welcome to the Glenelg Shire Council

MEDIA RELEASE - New residents - this party is for you

26 March 2019

A welcome event is being planned for Portland’s newest residents to help their sea change transition.

The Committee for Portland, in partnership with Glenelg Shire Council, is hosting a ‘Welcome Night’ on Friday 5 April 2019 at the Portland Yacht Club providing an opportunity for people to network, building new local connections with key organisations whilst meeting like-minded newcomers to the region.

Glenelg Shire Mayor and Committee for Portland board member Anita Rank said the night was an important objective of the Portland Ambassador program, which aims to assist new residents to connect with the local community.

She said it was a further step in advancing the work of the new www.thisisportland.com.au website and app, a State Government funded initiative, which is assisting job seekers in the local market.

“We have learnt from experience that people move to Portland to take on great career progression opportunities in a variety of sectors and enjoy their roles but often find it difficult to meet new people and make connections outside of their work environment,” Cr Rank said.

“Because of this people often travel back to Melbourne, or their former base at weekends, to be with old connections because they have found it too hard to meet new friends or join new groups. Sometimes they just don’t know where to go to make the connection, or even know what opportunities are available.

“This event aims to make this transition more comfortable, taking away the pressure of reaching out to make new connections – this is a room full of friendly faces wanting to make new friends.

“We know this is a wonderful place to work and live and we want our newest residents to immerse themselves in all of the great opportunities that are out there – this is a get together aimed at pointing them in the right direction.”

Cr Rank said support was required from key local leaders, from various services, organisations, sporting clubs and service groups to meet the new residents, and potentially recruit their support.

“This is an extremely relaxed event and a chance for new residents to meet like-minded new workers, and build new connections in the community,” Cr Rank said.

“For those interested, there will also be an opportunity to get your feet wet with a sailing experience with the friendly members of the Portland Yacht Club, prior to the official function.”

The Welcome Event starts at 5.30pm with sailing opportunities available from 5pm. To learn more visit the Committee for Portland Facebook page or register your attendance by emailing admin@committeeforportland.com.au
