MEDIA RELEASE - Have your say on blueprint for sport and recreation

29 April 2019

Walkers, runners, cyclists, swimmers, gym goers and sport enthusiasts are invited to have their say on the draft vision for sport and recreation in the Glenelg Shire.

The draft Active Your Way Glenelg Sport and Active Recreation Plan was endorsed by councillors at the April Ordinary Council Meeting and is now out for public exhibition until 22 May 2019.

The draft document provides a blue print for council’s investment in sport and active recreation for the next 10 years. Funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, the plan is the first of its kind for the shire.

Glenelg Shire recreation coordinator Hayley Rowe encouraged community members to read the document and have their say on the proposed focus areas.

“Overall, the plan seeks to support participation in sport and active recreation to increase physical activity and improve health and wellbeing outcomes for residents at every stage of life,” she said.

“This will be achieved through six focus areas, which have been developed from the community consultation held late last year and a background analysis.

“The focus areas are active lifestyles, facilities, health and wellbeing, inclusiveness and diversity, participation and partnerships, forming the basis of council’s future work and investment in sport and active recreation.

“An Active Your Way Glenelg Sport and Active Recreation Implementation Plan will also be developed to measure our progress towards these long term goals.

“I encourage community members of all ages who walk, run, cycle, swim or participate in organised sports to take the opportunity to read this important document, your feedback will help shape the next decade of sport and recreation in the Glenelg Shire.”
