MEDIA RELEASE - Blueprint for sport and recreation endorsed

26 June 2019

A vision to enhance the next decade of sport and recreation in the Glenelg Shire has been set following the endorsement of a new strategic document.

The Active Your Way Glenelg Sport and Active Recreation Plan was adopted by councillors at last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, providing a blue print for sport and active recreation for the next 10 years.

Funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, the plan is the first of its kind for the shire.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said community input had been instrumental in the shaping the document.

“Sport and recreation is central to our way of life and this new plan is our way of ensuring more people have the opportunity to be a part of a sporting team, find a new running path or continue with their active lifestyle,” she said.

“Community input into the plan was extensive and we thank the 116 community members, 62 sporting and recreation clubs, 25 community agencies and business and the 11 schools who provided their valuable feedback to shape the future for sport and recreation in the Glenelg Shire.

“Overall, the plan seeks to support participation in sport and active recreation to increase physical activity and to improve the health and wellbeing for residents at every stage of life. This will be achieved through six focus areas, active lifestyles, facilities, health and wellbeing, inclusiveness and diversity, participation and partnerships, forming the basis of council’s future work and investment in sport and active recreation.

“An Active Your Way Glenelg Sport and Active Recreation Implementation Plan is currently being developed to establish discrete actions to achieve these long term goals. There is plenty to be excited about for the future of sport and recreation in the Glenelg Shire.”
