MEDIA RELEASE - Community grants assist hard working volunteer groups

30 July 2019

Cash injections of $5000 will assist to build a new toilet at the Mumbannar Hall and replace a roof at the Dunrobin Hall in the latest round of Glenelg Shire Council’s Community Grants program.

A total of 37 shire-wide community not-for-profit groups and organisations shared in the latest funding round valued at $81,000.

Among the beneficiaries were the Portland Golf Club which received $900 to host ladies learn to play golf sessions plus $4000 for drainage works, in addition to $4000 for the Casterton Polocrosse Club for amenity upgrades, plus $5000 for kitchen upgrades and purchase of a new barbecue at the Narrawong Hall.

The Rotary Club of Portland Bay will use $1000 to buy a laptop, the Heywood and District Garden Club will use $1000 for a recycling competition and the Casterton Old Courthouse community centre will use $4000 to undertake maintenance on its multipurpose room.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank and fellow councillors awarded cheques to the successful recipient at a community celebration in Heywood at the council offices tonight.

Cr Rank said the council had been proud to award almost $2 million over the past decade in community grants.

“In this latest funding round, we have assisted to reward projects worth more than $300,000 across our shire,” Cr Rank said.

“These grants can be the difference to these hard working volunteers realising their project goals, and importantly all of this money will be injected back into support our local businesses and tradespeople.”

Cr Rank said it was pleasing to see growth in requests from local hall committees in recent years.

“It is wonderful to see that some of our small country halls are regaining new lifeblood with community events and celebrations, as more young families move into the area.

“It is of note, the Mumbannar Hall is using $5000 towards its toilet project. The hall is being rejuvenated with regular events, including a recent Christmas in July plus ongoing exercise classes to support community wellbeing in the close-knit farming township.

“Funding like our community grants go a long way for these rural and isolated committees to realise their goals, which is extremely pleasing for our council chamber and staff.”
