MEDIA RELEASE - Australia Day nominations extended

22 October 2019

Do you know a local hero or community group that deserves to be recognised? There is still time to nominate, with nominations for the 2020 Australia Day Award officially extended.

Nominations for the 2020 Australia Day Awards will now close 5pm, Monday 4 November 2019, leaving Glenelg Shire residents with an additional two weeks to nominate a deserving citizen or community group for their outstanding achievements to the community.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the local Australia Day Awards were one of the most prestigious honours a community member could receive and council had allowed additional time for any new and existing nominations to be finalised.

“The Australia Day awards program is an official and inspiring way to acknowledge the contributions and performance made by community groups and individuals in our shire,” she said.

“We all know people, young and old, who are inspirations and dedicate their time and resources for the betterment of the community for no personal gain or benefit. Now is the time to acknowledge those people through these prestigious awards.

“I urge you to nominate your local heroes and help us to award the individuals and community groups you believe are worthy of recognition for their commitment to making the Glenelg Shire a great place to live, work and play.”

Recipients are announced and presented on Australia Day at events held throughout the shire.

Categories for the 2020 awards are:
• Citizen of the Year - awarded to a Shire resident aged over 25
• Young Citizen of the Year - awarded to a Shire resident aged under 25
• Senior Citizen of the Year - awarded to a Shire resident aged 60 or over
• Community Group of the Year - awarded to an organized community group based in the Glenelg Shire

Nomination forms can be obtained and lodged online at https://yoursay.glenelg.vic.gov.au/glenelg-shire-australia-day-awards-2020
