MEDIA RELEASE - Shire's first ever inclusive playspace opens to the public

5 March 2020

In an historic milestone for the Glenelg Shire the dream of the first ever All Abillties Playspace has become a reality, with the gates now open for public use.

From advocacy to construction, the $1.2 million community-driven project at the Portland Foreshore has been nearly three years in the making and provides an innovative state-of-the-art play facility, regardless of age or ability.

The large-scale, purpose-designed space was funded solely by the Glenelg Shire Council and is the first of its kind for the region, offering a mixture of equipment, nature-play elements, Indigenous artwork and meeting spaces.

Some of the features include a flying fox, wheelchair trampoline, slide, wheelchair carousel, swings, water play park, sandpit and a new designated car parking area with priority disability parking bays.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said it was a significant milestone for the community.

“This new All Abilities Playspace at the Portland Foreshore is the only purpose-designed space within the south west region where children of all abilities can play, learn and socialise - it is a landmark occasion for the shire to open this facility,” she said.

“The vision was to ensure a central, accessible location for parents and carers of children with disabilities, while creating a fun and engaging space. I’m pleased to see this vision has well and truly come to life.

“Importantly this new Playspace compliments our existing community infrastructure such as the Changing Places facility and the Youth Activity and Skate Space, which have been pivotal in building visitation to the area and revitalising the Foreshore precinct.

“This new state of the art Playspace will only further improve our shire’s burgeoning tourism profile, as well as attracting a new generation of users to this beautiful precinct.”

An official opening ceremony for the All Abilities Playspace will take place later this month.
