MEDIA STATEMENT - Covid-19 18 March 2020

18 March 2020

JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE MAYOR AND CEO
Protecting the health and safety of our community is Council’s top priority. We are closely monitoring all health updates and are responding to important Federal and State Government directives to reduce social contact to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

In keeping with this, today we have made the decision to close some of our community venues and services.

From 12pm today, the Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre, outdoor pools in Casterton, Merino and Heywood and all Glenelg Libraries branches will be closed to the public. This will remain effective until 18 April, however we will monitor the situation daily.

Essential services such as waste collection and home care will continue. Our Customer Services Centres will remain open, however we ask that you keep visits to these sites to a minimum and instead to contact us using our website or phone.

A public information hotline has been established by the Department of Health and Human Services to answer any queries from the community, general or health related. This hotline can be reached by calling 1800 675 398.

We are providing ongoing updates on our website, social media and email newsletters to ensure local residents have the latest information and advice about how Covid-19 is affecting the region and what they should do.

Please also continue to visit the Department of Health and Human Services website www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus for the latest advice and information about coronavirus from the lead authorities.

We hope our community understands these decisions are not taken lightly. But by taking these measures we can help prevent a sharp spike in the number of infections, reducing the pressure on our health system and ensuring that everyone gets access to the care they need.
