Maternal and Child Health Services

Maternal and Child Health is a free service for all children aged from birth to 6 years, offering ten Key Age and Stage visits, as well as immunisation and additional targeted support if required.

The service is staffed by Maternal and Child Health Nurses (registered nurses with qualifications in midwifery, maternal and child health) and is managed by Portland District Health.

Portland District Health have successfully been appointed the shire’s new contractor of maternal and child health services, providing universal, enhanced and early childhood health and immunisation services.

Portland Portland Child and Family Complex Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-4.30pm and as required on Wednesdays.

How often should I visit?

There are a recommended minimum number of visits for all children to check their growth and development at key ages. These visits are intended to support you in keeping yourself and your baby well and provide the opportunity for any potential problems to be dealt with promptly.

- Home visits (birth)
- 2 weeks
- 4 weeks
- 8 weeks
- 4 months
- 8 months
- 12 months
- 18 months
- 2 years
- 3 1/2 years

Parents are encouraged to ask the nurse about anything that is worrying them.

As part of the key visits, a thorough development and screening assessment is undertaken (PEDS) to help identify areas of need and provide early intervention, to ensure better outcomes for your child.

Maternal & Child Health line

A 24-hour telephone service staffed by Maternal & Child Health nurses for families of children aged birth to school age is available by contacting 13 22 29.
