The first walk of 2023 will be a twilight walk in the Portland Area: the Clifftops to Cemetery Walk is No 31 in the Short Walks Book.
The walk but will start and finish at the Portland World War 2 Lookout Museum, making it approx. 7 km in length. Initially the walk follows the grassy clifftops from where beautiful coastal views of Portland Bay can be enjoyed. The walk then crosses Dutton Way to follow a path that rises to reach an entrance to the old Portland Cemetery. Overgrown and atmospheric, the headstones listing among the native grasses make for a poignant reminder of Portland’s history, the first burial being in 1844.
Leaving the cemetery this walk continues along Cavendish and Theresa Streets then turns right towards the coast. At the cliffs we walk down the Maretimo Staircase to Dutton way, then turn right along the coast and retracing our steps along the cliff tops back to the finish.
Everyone is invited to join us for a meal at a local hotel after the walk (at 6pm).
Please contact Julie on 5523 2131 by Thursday 12th to register.
