Tourism Road Signage

This guidelines seeks to help tourism businesses applying for road signs.

If you operate a business which primarily attracts and caters for visitors, you may be eligible for road signing to improve businesses visibility to customers and to improve the appeal of the region. 

Eligibility Criteria

If you operate a business within Glenelg Shire which primarily attracts and caters for visitors you may be eligible for road signing. Applications will only be considered if they including the following criteria:

  • A customer request form for a tourism sign is submitted and allocated under 'Roads, Footpaths, Drainage and Rural Trees'.

  • All details are provided, including business name, information to be included on the sign/s requested, proposed location/s of the sign.

  • Confirmation on type of road signs required for tourism businesses: (1) white text on brown background for tourism attractions and (2) white text on a blue background for tourism services.

  • If successful, businesses will be required to meet the costs associated with the provision of the sign(s). Costs associated with this process must be paid prior to fabrication and installation, any additional cost associated with maintenance/replacement will be at the cost of the business.

Eligibility does not automatically guarantee entitlement to tourism road signs as other factors will be considered by the road authorities and Council.

Tourism Road Sign Process

Following receiving a Service Request Form, the Economic Development Unit will initiate the below process:
  • Review and assess eligibility
  • If proposed location is on VicRoads land, confirmation if VicRoads Authority the VicRoads approval has been received
  • Engage Council's Assets Unit to support the design and fabrication
  • Installation of new business signage 

If successful, businesses will be required to meet the costs associated with the provision of the sign(s).Costs associated with this process must be paid prior to fabrication and installation, any additional cost associated with maintenance/replacement will be at the cost of the business.

Businesses will need to factor into their planning that the overall process from application to manufacture and installation may take at a minimum three to four months from start to finish.
