Former AFL premiership player and mental health advocate Wayne Schwass will visit Heywood next week as part of community wellbeing event.

With a distinguished football career that included 282 AFL games, a premiership and All-Australian honours, Schwass has spent more than two decades helping Australians have meaningful conversations about wellbeing, resilience and mental health.

He will spearhead the Practical Wellbeing For Better Health event on Wednesday 17 June 2026 from 6pm at the Heywood Community Hall.

The free event, held in partnership with Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West and Rotary’s Say No to Family Violence Committee, will provide participants with practical tools, strategies and insights to help them prioritise their wellbeing, build resilience and maintain healthy habits.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said Council was pleased to offer an event that promotes positive wellbeing and community connection.

"Wayne Schwass is one of Australia's most respected wellbeing advocates,” she said.

“Drawing on his lived experience, elite sporting career, corporate leadership background and extensive facilitation experience, Wayne brings an authentic perspective to wellbeing that resonates with people from all walks of life.

"This event is for everyone in our community. Whether you are looking to strengthen your own wellbeing, support those around you, or simply hear from one of Australia's leading speakers, there will be something valuable to take away."

This focus on community wellbeing is shared by project partner Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West.

“By encouraging conversations around emotional awareness, the initiative aims to strengthen protective factors that contribute to safer, more respectful communities and improved wellbeing outcomes for all community members,” said CEO Jodie Hill.

The event is also supported by Wellways, Lions Club of Heywood, Menting Minds Portland and the Heywood Men’s Shed.

Community members can reserve a seat for the event online through Eventbrite.
