Advocating for Glenelg Shire in the halls of Parliament

Glenelg Shire Council has taken its advocacy priorities directly to Victorian Parliament House last week, with Mayor Cr Karen Stephens and CEO Helen Havercroft meeting with Ministers, Shadow Ministers and Members of Parliament to champion the needs of local communities.
Representing the South West Victoria Alliance, Mayor Stephens and Ms Havercroft highlighted the key issues, challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the region.
During the visit, Council advocated for investment and support across several priority areas, including:
- $1bn additional State Road infrastructure and maintenance
- $2bn over 4 years for economic development and liveability support with community infrastructure investment
- Early childhood education and care
Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said direct engagement with government decision-makers was an important part of Council's advocacy efforts.
"These conversations matter because they provide an opportunity to ensure the needs and aspirations of Glenelg Shire communities are heard by those making decisions," Cr Stephens said.
"With the Victorian State Election approaching, Council is advocating strongly for the investment our communities need to thrive. By taking our priorities directly to Ministers, Shadow Ministers and MPs, we are working to secure the recognition, support and funding needed to strengthen local services, improve infrastructure and create opportunities for our residents now and into the future."
Council will continue to work with regional partners through the South West Victoria Alliance to advocate for outcomes that benefit communities across the region.
The SouthWest Victoria Alliance advocates on behalf of communities across a vast region that includes the shires of Corangamite, Glenelg, Moyne, Southern Grampians and the City of Warrnambool. To learn more about the Alliance, visit the website.
