Community grants do it again

Community grants

What do a group of archery enthusiasts, surf life savers, a historical society and progress associations have in common?

They are among 32 local groups and organisations which shared in more than $82,000 in funds from the latest round of Glenelg Shire Council’s Community Grants Program.

Council adopted the recommendations for the grants at the April Council meeting on Tuesday evening for Round 2 of the program for 2023-24, enabling community groups to receive grants of up to $5000.

As always there were a diverse group of recipients for a diverse range of projects, including the Mount Clay Archers ($1000), Portland Surf Life Saving Club ($2083), Casterton and District Historical Society ($3150), Dartmoor and District Progress Association ($2500) and Merino Progress Association ($1000).

Eight groups received the maximum $5000 – Promoting Portland’s Maritime Heritage, Casterton Business and Development Association, Nelson Tourism Association – Vic Bream Classics, Portland Aero Club, Casterton Polocrosse Club, South Portland Cricket Club, Portland Basketball Association and Casterton Little Athletics Centre.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Karen Stephens said the grants were a small way Council could contribute to helping the hard work of the Shire’s many volunteers.

“The $82,745 in funding Council provides will also lead to almost $250,000 in work to be done in the Shire,” Cr Stephens said.

“Council has always been proud to support the many groups that are the glue that holds our communities together.”

Council allocates $162,000 to the program annually, spread over two rounds. Grants of up to $1000 can be made without a co-contribution from the group, but those between $1000 and $5000 must be matched dollar for dollar.

The recipients of this round of Community Grants will be invited to a function in Heywood in mid-May to receive their funding allocations.
