Council is proud to recognise National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2026, embracing this year’s theme, “All In” with a series of local initiatives.

The theme, ‘All In’, highlights that reconciliation is a shared responsibility, encouraging individuals, organisations and communities to strengthen relationships, deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and work together for a more inclusive future.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said NRW was an important opportunity for reflection, learning and action. “Reconciliation is not a one-week commitment, it’s something we all need to be ‘All In’ for, every day,” she said.

“Council remains committed to reconciliation by strengthening relationships with First Nations communities, increasing cultural understanding and embedding inclusive and respectful practices across our services.

“In partnership with local Aboriginal organisations, we will also deliver a range of activities across NRW designed to promote awareness, participation and cultural celebration.”

2026 Activities

A key initiative this year is a Coffee Cup Art Competition, running from 7 - 24 April 2026. Community members are invited to submit artwork that reflects the Reconciliation theme “All-In”.

The competition includes three categories:

  • Primary School
  • Secondary School
  • Adult (18+)

Winning designs will be printed on takeaway coffee cups and shared through selected cafes across Portland, Heywood and Casterton, creating a visible and meaningful way to share reconciliation messages across the Shire.

Art competition guidelines and an application form can be downloaded via Council’s website.

A Sunrise Ceremony will close our National Reconciliation Week on Wednesday 3 June at the Kardumuler Karweeyn Mirring Portland Dance Ground. The event will feature a Welcome to Country, School Reconciliation Showcase, Dance Performance, and a Smoking Ceremony, as well as a showcase of the winning coffee cup artwork. All community is welcome to attend from 7.20am.
