Council offers free school holiday fun this Winter

Escape the Winter blues these school holidays, with a range of exciting, free activities on offer thanks to the Glenelg Shire Council.

The teams at Glenelg Libraries, Glenelg Youth, Portland Arts Centre and Maritime Discovery Centre are once again combining to ensure a fun-filled program of events across the Shire.

Running from the 7 – 18 July the activities include:

Circus Workshops

Ages: Children’s session (7-12 years) and Youth session (13-25 years)

Location: Portland

Sessions: 

Children’s Session - Monday 7 July 1:00pm - 2:30pm

Youth Session - Monday 7 July 3:00pm - 4:30pm

Join circus artists Christy Flaws and Luke O’Connor from Asking for Trouble and dive headfirst into the exciting world of Circus! The workshops involve a combination of creative games, physical warm-up, juggling, hula hooping and acro-balance.

Life Hacks

Ages: 15-25 years

Location: Portland

Dates: 8-17 July 2025

  • Simple Mechanics
  • Self-care and Self-defence
  • Responsible service of alcohol
  • Coffee making
  • Safe food handling

• Robotics and Coding

Ages:8-13 (must work in pairs with a parent/carer)

Location: Portland

Dates: 9 July, 10am – 11:15am, 1pm -2:15pm

Looking to discover the power of robots? Join Museums Victoria to explore how simple programs can control complex machines!

Whaley Good!

Ages:8-12 

Location: Portland Maritime Discovery Centre

Dates: 11 July, 10:30am – 11:30am

18 July, 10:30am – 11:30am

Come along to the Portland Maritime Museum and explore the whale skeleton and learn all about  these magnificent mammals that live in the seas around us. Then it's time to get creative - sculpt, carve and mould from air drying clay to create your own mini sea creature to take home!

Comics and Cartooning

Ages: 8-16

Location: Portland

Date: 14 July, 10:30am – 12pm

In this session participants will learn how to create their own comic book with the help of Squishface Comic Studio & Friends.

Vocal Coaching and Stage Presence Workshops

Ages: 12-25 years

Location: Portland

Date: 14 July 12:00pm – 1:30pm

Learn breath work, singing exercises, performance tips and confidence building techniques with Danielle Stearman.

• Cardboard Construction

Ages:5-12

Location: Casterton and Heywood

Dates: Casterton 16 July, 10am-12pm and Heywood 17 July, 10am-12pm

Children will imagine, design and build their own cardboard creations in a collaborative, hands-on session.

  • Activities are FREE and materials are supplied where required.
  • Our school holiday programs are very popular and usually book out. If you can no longer attend, please call to cancel so that another child or young person can participate.
  • Parents and carers must remain with children under 12 years of age during all sessions.
