Glenelg Shire Council has welcomed the recent State Budget update confirming a two-year rate freeze for primary producers under the Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund (ESVF).

This freeze provides much-needed extended relief for local farmers, particularly as south-west Victoria continues to endure one of the worst droughts in recent history.

Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the announcement reflects months of strong advocacy by Council and its regional partners.

“Council has been advocating for the removal of the ESVF since February 2025, and has collaborated with peak bodies such as the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), Rural Councils Victoria, and the South West Victorian Alliance to amplify this call to action. This outcome shows what can be achieved when regional voices unite,” Cr Stephens said.

“This is not the finish line - we will continue our steadfast campaign against the ESVF.”

Council also acknowledged the tireless efforts of CFA volunteers.

“Emergency service volunteers are the backbone of our community. Their tireless advocacy has also been instrumental in achieving this result and we thank them for all that they have done to help highlight the impact of this excessive tax on our local communities,” said Cr Stephens.
