$150,000 in Regional Arts Victoria Funding will ensure Glenelg Shire’s valuable Cultural Collection of significant artworks are preserved for future generations.

Glenelg Shire was successful in their application for a Tier 2 grant through the Victorian Government’s Regional Collections Access Program. The announcement was made yesterday at Hamilton Gallery and Glenelg Shire’s Cultural Collection is among 36 museums and galleries across regional Victoria to benefit from the $4 million investment through this scheme.

Mayor, Cr Anita Rank, said Glenelg Shire Council is custodian to a hugely significant and diverse collection which is currently stored in several spaces across the shire.

“Through this grant the current storage space, which is given to the 250 works of art in the Portland Arts Centre, will be upgraded to a climate controlled, museum standard facility”.

“This space will provide the first museum standard storage space for the Glenelg Shire and will be the first step towards fulfilling our vision of preserving and developing the collection for the benefit of the community,” Cr Rank said.

The grant is administered and delivered by Regional Arts Victoria in partnership with Creative Victoria, the Australian Museums and Galleries Association Victoria, the Public Galleries Association of Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria.

The grant supports museums and galleries to appropriately care for a store their cultural collections.
