As the busy summer season for tourists comes to a close Council, together with community and local industry stakeholders, have been working on a refreshed vision for tourism in the Glenelg Shire.

At the February Council Meeting the Draft Glenelg Shire Tourism Strategy 2026–2031 was celebrated and from Monday 2nd March will be open for broad community feedback. The document sets out a path for Glenelg Shire to grow as the welcoming, distinctive and sustainable destination that is loved so much.

The Strategy has five key focus areas:

  1. Place, Nature and Cultural Experience
  2. Sustainable Visitor Economy
  3. Destination Awareness and Promotion
  4. Industry and Community Partnerships
  5. Access, Facilities and Visitor Readiness

The draft Strategy also includes an implementation plan to guide Council’s work in a staged and coordinated approach across the five year period.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens thanked the community and industry stakeholders who provided valuable insights during the early consultation phase in late 2025.

“I want to sincerely thank every community member, business operator and industry partner who took the time to share their insights. Your input, whether through workshops, surveys or conversations, has been crucial in shaping this draft Strategy,” Cr Stephens said.

“We learnt that the community recognises that we have real opportunities, whether that be growing our tourism brand or building on our year‑round attractions, that can help unlock our Shire’s full potential.

“This Strategy is about ensuring we grow in the right way. This means protecting what makes us unique while creating new opportunities for local businesses, communities and visitors.

“Through the five focus areas, Council can direct our efforts to best support our tourism industry and grow visitation across the Shire.”

The Draft Glenelg Shire Tourism Strategy 2026–2031 is open for comment until 5pm, Monday 30th March.

Community members can view the document and leave their feedback via the YourSay Glenelg website.
