FOGO is a go-go in Glenelg Shire

FOGO is a go go’ in the Glenelg Shire, with new designs and infrastructure on the way ahead of the rollout of the service.
The much-anticipated Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) kerbside collection service is set to officially launch in April 2026, bringing a vital step forward in waste management and sustainability.
The project continues to track ahead with new FOGO infrastructure, including all green-lid bins and kitchen caddies, currently being manufactured and expected to arrive early in the new year.
Over the coming months, residents will receive detailed information on correct disposal methods, collection times and service standards to ensure a smooth transition.
Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the next step in the rollout was branding, with a design proudly shaped from local involvement.
“As part of our community engagement, we invited Primary Schools from across the Shire to help design the new FOGO branding and slogan. The response was overwhelming, with more than 120 local students submitting designs that showcased their understanding of recycling and waste reduction,” she said.
“The slogan “FOGO is a Go Go” featured prominently in many entries and has now been adopted as the official catchcry for the rollout. We all thank all the students for their fantastic contributions, you can see all the creative entries at the display located in the Portland Library foyer.”
Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the introduction of FOGO reflected both community priorities and State Government policy.
“This is an exciting milestone for our Shire. FOGO will significantly reduce landfill waste and help us move toward a circular economy,” she explained.
“The FOGO service was included in the 2025–2026 Council Budget following strong community support, particularly during engagement for the 2025–29 Council Plan. The rollout also aligns with the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria policy, which mandates the introduction of organics collection across the state.
“We look forward to sharing more updates on FOGO in 2026 as we move closer towards the official launch date.”
