A key document supporting community groups across the Glenelg Shire has been officially adopted.

The Community Funding and Support Policy was unanimously endorsed by Councillors at the May Council Meeting. The policy guides Council’s funding support to grassroots volunteer-based community groups or organisations including the popular Community Grants Program.

The endorsed Policy introduces several key changes, including:

  • Inclusion of the new Ageing Well grants category within the Community Grants Program;
  • Increase of Community Grants Program funding across all categories:
    • Maximum grant amount increased to $6,000 (previously $5,000);
    • Funding for auspiced community groups increased to $750 (previously $500);
    • Minimum co-contribution threshold increased to $1,500 (previously $1,000).

The draft Policy was open for community feedback throughout March with a total of 12 submissions received, with submissions covering eligibility, funding scope and general program understanding.

Overall, feedback indicated that the funding criteria is well understood by the community and several minor amendments have been made to improve clarity and alignment. These refinements have also supported the updated funding structure.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the policy would strengthen Council’s support for grassroots organisations.

“Community groups are the lifeblood of the Glenelg Shire, and we are fortunate to have such a strong and diverse network of organisations that make our region a great place to live, work and play,” she said.

“This policy will help ensure a fair, equitable and inclusive approach to funding. In particular, the increased funding amounts will make a real difference to community groups in delivering important local initiatives.

“We thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback and we encourage community groups to start planning for the next round of Community Grants, which will open in July.”

The Community Funding and Support Policy is available to view via Council’s website. The Community Grants Program Guidelines are currently under be review and will be published to Council’s website.
