Glenelg Shire positioned for future growth through major diversification initiatives
Glenelg Shire Council has welcomed the completion of the Future Fibre Hardwood Timber Manufacturing Hub Feasibility Study and the continued development of Council's Future Portland Project, two initiatives helping to shape the Glenelg Shire's economic future.
Together, the projects represent a major step forward in building a stronger, more resilient and diversified economy for Portland and the wider Glenelg Shire.
The completed Fibre Hardwood Timber Manufacturing Hub Feasibility Study has identified opportunities to establish advanced timber manufacturing in Portland, creating pathways to transform locally grown timber resources into high-value construction products such as glue laminated timber and laminated veneer lumber. The study provides a foundation for future investment, industry growth and advanced manufacturing opportunities in the region.
At the same time, Council is leading the Future Portland Project, an interactive economic dashboard that will provide local decision-makers, businesses and stakeholders with real-time insights into major projects, workforce needs, housing demand and community infrastructure requirements. The platform is designed to help the region respond proactively to economic change and maximise the benefits of future investment.
Together, these initiatives reinforce the Glenelg Shire's role as a key regional centre and support long-term economic development across the shire.
Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said Council was committed to ensuring the Glenelg Shire remains well positioned to capture emerging opportunities.
“The Glenelg Shire is entering an exciting chapter, and these projects demonstrate the confidence that government, industry and the community have in our region's future.
The completion of the Timber Manufacturing Hub Feasibility Study is an important milestone that has confirmed opportunities to create more value from our existing strengths, support local jobs and attract future investment in advanced manufacturing right here in Glenelg Shire.
At the same time, the Future Portland Project will give Council and our partners the information and insights needed to plan ahead, respond to growth and ensure our community is ready to take advantage of new opportunities as they emerge.
Together, these initiatives are about building a stronger, more resilient economy, attracting investment, supporting local businesses and creating opportunities for future generations,” Cr Stephens said.
Council looks forward to working with government, industry and community stakeholders to build on the outcomes of the feasibility study and support the next stage of economic development opportunities for Portland and the wider Glenelg Shire.
