Households in the Glenelg Shire are being encouraged to get fire ready this Spring, with a free green-waste initiative on offer.

With warmer and drier conditions forecast, it’s more important than ever to reduce fuel loads around homes, sheds, and rural properties. To support this, the Glenelg Shire Council will provide free green waste disposal for residents and ratepayers at all local Waste Management facilities from Friday 31 October to Sunday 9 November 2025 (inclusive).

Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to clean up their properties by removing dry vegetation, fallen branches, leaf litter, and other flammable materials.

“With warmer and drier conditions forecast, it’s more important than ever to reduce fuel loads around homes, sheds and rural properties,” said Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens.

“Clearing vegetation on vacant blocks and areas surrounding dwellings is a simple but effective way to reduce fire danger and protect your home and family.”

“Whatever corner of the Glenelg Shire you live in there will be a waste management facility nearby, with Portland, Heywood, Casterton, Merino and Nelson all boasting facilities. We hope to see as many households as possible take advantage of this initiative.”

Accepted green waste includes:

  • Tree and shrub pruning's
  • Leaves and grass clippings
  • Small branches and twigs

Please note: This free drop off is for Glenelg Shire Residents and HOUSEHOLD Garden Waste ONLY, no commercial loads or businesses are eligible.

General household rubbish, and timber will not be accepted as part of this free service. This initiative is for household quantities and available to Glenelg Shire ratepayers and residents only. A limit of 1 cubic metre of green waste per customer applies.

For opening hours of your nearest Waste Management facility, visit the Glenelg Shire Council website at www.glenelg.vic.gov.au or contact Customer Service on 1300 GLENELG.

Meanwhile Council staff will soon commence fire hazard inspections, focusing on vacant blocks and areas surrounding dwellings throughout the Glenelg Shire Council.

Property owners are reminded that under the CFA Act and Fire Rescue Victoria Act, penalties can apply for:

  • Failing to comply with Fire Prevention Notices, and
  • Breaching conditions of Permits to Burn issued during the Fire Danger Period.
