Do you have a dog or cat that is a key member of your household and family? Or do your neighbours have pets? Council wants to hear from you!

Community members are encouraged to give their feedback on the draft Glenelg Shire Domestic Animal Management Plan 2021 – 2025. The Draft Plan outlines Council’s approach to animal management (dogs and cats) and seek to balance the needs of pet owners with the rest of the community.

All Councils across Victoria are required to develop a Domestic Animal Management Plan under the Domestic Animals Act 1994.

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the document was shaped by community feedback received during the consultation process.

“In developing this Draft Plan, we collected more than 300 survey responses from residents right across the Shire, who provided valuable feedback on animal management and welfare. We thank all those who completed the survey and provide us with key insights,” she said.

“The findings from the community survey revealed a number of trends, including:

  • Concern regarding dogs not under effective control in off and on leash areas;
  • Calls for more education around dog faeces due to sightings of uncollected dog waste on a regular basis in public places;
  • More signage for dog zones and dog prohibited areas;
  • Support for the reduction of puppy and kitten breeding in the Shire;

“These considerations, and others, have been included in the draft DAMP where applicable.

“Council will aim to reduce the number of unidentifiable cats and kittens, and promote animal welfare platforms and programs.

“Council will seek to reduce and minimise the risk of dog attacks in the community, including developing a proactive and regular patrol schedule for officers, including weekends and major events.

“Council will also undertake a comprehensive review of dog control areas to ensure an effective balance of existing on leash and off leash areas

“However we want to hear from the community whether any further actions are required in the Draft Plan, and whether it best meets the needs of our pet-loving Shire.”
