Kathleen Millikan Centre to re-open
Published on 31 October 2024
The Kathleen Millikan Centre will re-open for kindergarten and long day care services on Monday, 11 November.
Glenelg Shire Council has been busy working on a way to restore the crucial service to Casterton since the storm of 16 October caused extensive damage, not only to the building but to the town in general.
An assessment by our insurers and builders has found that the service area at KMC can be made safe and ready for use by 11 November 2024.
This will not be a return to full service but will mean the kindergarten and long day care services can resume on that date – the office space will need to remain closed and the Maternal and Child Health service will operate out of Casterton hospital until further notice.
KMC won’t look how it usually does, with some repair works still to be undertaken which includes a new roof and other minor interior repairs.
This will result in a closure at a future date, however we will try and align to a period of closure such as school holidays or Easter.
Families have been notified about the re-opening and have been invited to inspect the service later next week, before it re-opens, to ease any concerns they might have.
Council Director Community Services Jayne Miller said she thanked families and staff for their patience while the assessment was carried out, as well as all those who worked to bring about the return to service.
“We know it has been a stressful time for everyone in Casterton but we operate in a highly-regulated sector and we had to make sure we ticked all the boxes before we re-open,” she said.
