The next stage of a key community project for Portland’s growing outer suburbs is now out for community comment.

Designs for Stage 2 of the Portland North Connecting Pathways are out for public feedback, with residents invited to have their say on the draft design.

Stage 1 of the project, which is currently under construction, has seen the creation of pedestrian pathways from Cavendish Street through to the Hanlon Parade/Learmonth Street roundabout.

Stage 2 of the project will see the pathways extended through to Noel Street, Maretimo, providing pedestrian access from Maretimo Estate, via Sea View and Blue Water Estates.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the project scope had been broadened following community interest.

“The community were highly engaged when Council announced the Portland North Connecting Pathways project earlier this year and provided the feedback to have the pathway extended through to the Maretimo area for a greater accessible walking trail for the growing Portland North population,” she explained.

“It was fantastic to see the community so interested in the project, and to also see residents passionate about healthy lifestyles, so we took this commentary on board to broaden the overall project.

“As a result, a draft design for Stage 2 has now been developed and we are thrilled to share this with the Portland North community.

“The proposed design will see a majority of the path consist of a 2.5 metre wide asphalt surface, with a smaller section of a new concrete footpath construction to link to the existing footpaths. However, the final design is subject to public feedback we receive.”

Cr Rank noted that the project was subject to further funding.

“Following the community feedback process, we will be able to finalise the designs for Stage 2. From here, Council will be able to prepare a budget submission for future capital works programs or grant funding applications where applicable,” she said.

Hard copies of the design will also be available to view at Council’s Percy Street offices.

Feedback closes 7 November 2022.
