Do you know a local personality who deserves to be celebrated on canvas?

Here’s your unique chance to nominate them for a portrait sitting with acclaimed southwest Victorian artist Ron Penrose, whose work will be featured in a major exhibition at the Portland Arts Centre in 2026.

Penrose, known for his portraiture and connection to regional communities, is inviting locals to help shape his upcoming exhibition by suggesting subjects for a new series of portraits.

“This is more than an art exhibition — it’s a celebration of the people who make the Glenelg Shire special,” said Collections Management Coordinator Agostina Hawkins.

“Ron’s work captures the spirit of his subjects, and this is a rare opportunity for community members to be part of that creative process.

“As part of the campaign Penrose is seeking five to ten individuals from the Shire whose stories and character reflect the heart of the community. It’s a rare and unique opportunity to see our local personalities come to life on canvas!”

Community members are encouraged to nominate someone they admire, whether it be a neighbour, mentor, volunteer, or quiet achiever, by completing the online submission form via the Portland Arts Centre website.

Nominations should include a short explanation of why the person deserves to be featured. All sitters need to be aged 18 or over and agree to have their portrait painted. Ron will work from a photograph so there is no need for time consuming sittings!

Nominations are open until 10 October.
